Aral Harbour

In der Stadt Aral, die im Südwesten Kasachstans im Gebiet Qysylorda liegt, gibt es nicht mehr viel zu sehen. Die einst blühende Fischermetropole steht seit dem der Wasserspiegel des Aralsees gesunken ist quasi still. Auf dem Bild ist einer der beiden noch übrig gebliebenen Hafenkräne zu sehen, der aus der Ferne wie eine träge Giraffe wirkt, die verzweifelt nach Wasser sucht. Die Region rund um Aral hat eine der höchsten Arbeitslosigkeitsraten in Kasachstan. Jedoch gibt es Hoffnung, dass der See den Hafen von Aral künftig wieder erreicht. Geplant ist, die Dammkrone des Kokaral-Damms zu erhöhen und einen zweiten Damm zu bauen. Die Kosten in Höhe von 126 Mio. Dollar werden von der Weltbank getragen. Ein Baubeginn ist noch nicht abzusehen.

Not much can be seen anymore in the city of Aral. It is located in the southwest of Kazakhstan in the Kyzylorda area. The former thriving fishing metropolis virtually came to a standstill since the water level of the Aral sea decreased. In the picture, you can see one of the two remaining harbour cranes, which from a distance looks like a sluggish giraffe desperately looking for water. The region around Aral has the highest unemployment rate in Kazakhstan. There’s still hope, however, that the sea will reach the harbour once again. It is planned to increase the dam crown of the Kokaral dam and to build a second dam. The costs come up to a total of 126 million dollars that the world bank will pay. The start of construction is not yet in sight.
